February Is National Children’s Dental Health Month

Did you know children’s teeth are at risk of decay as soon as they begin to surface? The good news is that caring for children’s dental health doesn’t have to be like pulling teeth! Cavities can be prevented with the right steps.

Here at Eriks Dental Group, we are committed to providing dentistry care for the whole family. This year, we’re participating in the American Dental Association’s (ADA) campaign for children’s dental health month on cavity prevention.

National Children’s Dental Health Month History

The first observance of this began in Cleveland, Ohio on February 3, 1949. What began as a one-day, two-city event aimed at educating the public became a week-long event in 1981. Then a month-long awareness campaign in 1981. These days, NCDHM still takes place each February.

The event brings together dental providers and health care providers to promote healthy teeth habits. Its aim is to educate families, caregivers, and parents on the importance of dental hygiene for a lifetime of smiles.

The slogan for National Children’s Dental Health Month (NCDHM) this year is “Sealants Make Sense”. The focus is to provide education about tooth sealants.

What are Sealants?

Sealants are white, protective coatings applied by a dentist. These coatings can reduce decay by up to 80%. They are quick and painless. The earlier a sealant can be applied, the better.

The process is simple. A gel is applied to the teeth. After a few seconds, the gel is rinsed, and the teeth are dried. There is a bonding agent applied and then the sealant is applied and hardened with a blue light.

Sealants are perfect for children who are just learning how to care for their teeth. Having this applied early protects teeth for years to come. It’s perfect for the little ones who may forget to brush or may not be brushing properly yet.

How to Establish Good Dental Hygiene

Tips for establishing good dental health with children can be simple. Following these steps can help parents, children, and families of all ages enjoy the lifelong benefits of having a healthy mouth.

1. Start early

The ADA recommends that children should see a dentist before their first birthday. Don’t wait until there is an emergency to seek care. An early visit can help identify any potential issues. This can also help a parent provide tooth care at home.

2. Set a good example

Allow children to watch you brush, floss, and rinse regularly. This routine can help protect tooth enamel too.

3. Make it a family routine

Involving the whole family makes dental healthcare fun for children. This also helps to reduce any reluctance children may have when it comes to brushing their teeth.

4. Have a seat

Many young children have trouble standing for two minutes to brush their teeth. Keep their attention by sitting down instead. Try incorporating games or music to make it more fun.

Other Tips & Considerations

Other considerations are to consult with a dentist for children under 2 years of age. For older children (4-6 years), use a pea-sized amount of toothpaste. Watch them brush to ensure they are spitting instead of swallowing. Continue with regular dental health check-ups.

Remember, baby teeth are at risk of decay too. Help prevent future cavities by including fluoride toothpaste. Some water sources have fluoride too. Check with the CDC’s My Water’s Fluoride to find your area.
